Museum Exhibits Work By 12 Local Emerging Artists

By ESTHER HAMMER
Tribune correspondent

Buying original art by local emerging artists is a good way to start an art collection or to just enjoy the surrounding bounty.

For either reason, the Tampa Museum of Art is the place to be today. From 6
to 9 p.m., Avant Garde, a group of art-promoting young professionals, will present an exhibit and sale called "2 Benny Art."

Benny refers to the picture of Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill. All the art is priced at $200 or less.

The 12 featured artists present eclectic styles and media:

*Shelby A. Baron combines multiple layers of text, paper, pastels and painted
images in her collages. For the exhibit, she is presenting her latest series,
"Chaos, Emily and Semi-seclusion." Inspired by the life and poetry of Emily
Dickinson, the collage pieces in the show represent the strength and fragility
of the human condition.

*Lin Carte, a master printer, has exhibited her intaglio prints, engravings,
etchings, monotypes, drawings and paintings in the United States and abroad.
They often feature images of family members, two Welsh corgi dogs and a
red-headed Amazon parrot.

*Rich Clements captures some of the light, warmth and feel of his native
Barbados in his acrylic paintings. His work is characterized by bright colors
and bold, thick brush strokes that add texture.

*Derek Curry grew up in the steel city of Pittsburgh and his mixed media
pieces reflect on the end of the industrial age.

*Mitzi Gordon focuses on minimalist details and strong colors, as evidenced in
her abstract and impressionistic photographs.

*Hugo Porcaro is known for his brightly colored, cartoon-like paintings but
also has created plywood constructions and paints on various surfaces, including
furniture, trash can lids and car hoods. He will present acrylic and mixed media
paintings and painted objects.

*Carrie Price will exhibit her small, delicate paintings on canvas. Her work
soon will be seen in the Art-O-Mat art vending machines at the Whitney Museum in
New York.

*Brandy Stark is fascinated by ancient mythologies and religions. She
re-creates old world characters and deities in sculptures of wire, metal and
found objects. She said the found objects show everything has a place in
society.

*Candace Young's background and interest are in history and science, themes
she repeats often in her landscapes, portraits and photographs.

Other artists in the exhibit are Karen Cuervo, Lorrie Mason and Ruth Mueller.

The event also will feature disc jockey duo Matt Ciafoni and Alex Lugo, who
call themselves "Funky Punk" and are known for their blend of funk, soul and
rock 'n' roll.

The exhibit is part of the museum's Art After Dark series held on the third
Thursday of the month.

Admission is free for museum and Avant Garde members. A $2 donation is
suggested for others. There will be light refreshments and a cash bar.

Subject :  Great Mail Art!

Hi Brandy,

Thanks for your call. Your wonderful piece of mail has arrived and will be part of the show in February. I will add your name to the web page for the next update. We hope to send a piece of mail art back to every one who participates, but that won't be until February.

Many thanks,

Bob Barzan

Hi,

Just to let you know. The mail art you sent for the Modesto Art Museum, Future Vision: The Art of Science Fiction has arrived. Thank you for participating in the event.

I am hoping to make this a dialogue, so you should receive a piece of mail art in return sometime during the exhibit in February 2007.  I will have material available for visitors to the gallery so they can make mail art and send it in response to the mail art they see on the wall. I am hoping to get people who have never sent mail art to send their first piece.

You can see details about the event on the museum web site at

Wishing you the best,

Bob Barzan (Claut)

About the Artist:
Having lived in the Tampa Bay area since 1980, I witnessed and experienced the arts bloom in the local region throughout my lifetime.  I feel fortunate to live in an area so active and supportive of these creative endeavors.  It is my privilege to promote local and national artists and their works to this community

I have a tiered experience working with the arts.  As a professor, I teach young minds the historic and aesthetic value of masterpieces found throughout history.  As an artist,  I have experience in the field which allots me an insider’s eye.  As a writer, I convey the visual encounter through words, enticing readers to experience for themselves the stimulation of soul that the arts provide.

I was privileged to work with St. Petersburg Times art critic, Mary Ann Marger, for two years.  She served as my mentor as I wrote weekly articles reviewing art shows, interviewing artists, and  promoting art galleries and museums.  I also wrote short book reviews and highlighted special events through “Weekend Spot Light” segments.

One of the most rewarding outcomes of writing for the St. Petersburg Times was the respect and support that I received from the local artists and galleries. There was a very positive rapport between the art community and the paper.

When Mary Ann retired, the St. Petersburg Times chose to hire from within.  As a freelance writer, I was not eligible for consideration for the full-time position.  I have continued to write for various other publications both online and through the print media.  These include www.sterlingpowell.com, www.carolineyork.com, Bayside News, and The Pinellas Informer.

I have participated in numerous local events and venues.  I have taught workshops for the Dali Museum and am an artist contributor to the Dali fundraisers.  I was accepted into the Avant-Garde program and have shown my works through the Tampa Museum of Art.  For the past four years, I have participated in the Much Ado About Art silent art auction.  I organized and facilitated a silent art auction, Taking Back the Night Blues Review, which successfully raised money for three domestic abuse shelters within the Tampa Bay area. I have been asked to continue my work for their fundraisers. I won several art prizes for my works. I also maintain my own art website at http://www.starkimages.homestead.com/Main.html.
